“How much humanity does AI need?” – Sopra Financial Technology presents provocative theories in the podcast “Tech und Tacheles”
News, 05/11/2025
In the latest episode of Tech & Tacheles, Christian Pfeiffer, CEO of Sopra Financial Technology, and Jürgen Schmidt from Deutsche Bank discuss the opportunities and limitations of artificial intelligence (AI) in the financial sector. Under the motto “Anyone who introduces AI must also consider ethics,” it quickly becomes clear that there is a fine line between trust in algorithms and human responsibility—and this is precisely the area of tension that the two financial insiders explore.
Nuremberg, November 5, 2025 – Artificial intelligence is changing the world of finance – but who is responsible when algorithms make decisions? In the eleventh episode of the podcast series “Tech & Tacheles,” Christian Pfeiffer and Jürgen Schmidt discuss ethics, trust, and the limits of technological progress. The two have different perspectives, but a common goal: to create clarity in an increasingly complex world.
Experience versus simulation
“AI does not replace human experience, it only simulates it,” says Jürgen Schmidt, clearly positioning himself in favor of an approach that puts people at the center. Christian Pfeiffer counters: “In AI, simulation can gradually even surpass human experience.” According to Pfeiffer, the more efficiently artificial intelligence learns, the more it challenges the role of human experience.
Schmidt sticks to his line and points to the paramount importance of responsibility, especially in the financial sector: “Ultimately, responsibility remains with humans. AI doesn't press the final button for you.” Both agree that ethical awareness is essential when using AI, but that the possible applications of the technology can vary greatly depending on the requirements and risk appetite of the users.
Human in the loop – why humans remain indispensable
Another focus of the discussion is transparency. “When I use AI, I need to be able to understand what is happening in the background,” says Schmidt. “Without auditing, you can't implement AI at all.” Pfeiffer agrees, at least for the financial sector. Here, the rule is: "Black boxes are not acceptable. We have to be able to explain why a decision was made this way and not another.“ He takes a more relaxed view of other industries: ”In medicine, for example, we also accept drugs whose exact mode of action is not fully understood. But in finance, that's impossible – we have to know every detail." Both agree that only those who disclose AI processes can build trust – within the organization and with customers.
Will artificial intelligence replace humans one day? “Completely? Never,” says Schmidt decisively. Pfeiffer differentiates: “I myself could imagine talking to a digital advisor – but many people want a personal conversation. And that will remain the case.” Especially in an industry that thrives on trust, the “human in the loop” is not a thing of the past, but rather a controlling authority, corrective force, and emotional connection in a digitalized world. Pfeiffer looks further ahead: “Perhaps in ten years' time, we will see AI making more accurate judgments than humans in certain areas. The decisive factor will be how we deal with it.” Schmidt counters: “The financial world is all about responsibility. Humans press the final button – and that's how it has to stay.”
The conversation makes it clear that technological development and social responsibility are inextricably linked. Where do statistics end and judgment begin? Where does AI help, and where is human intuition needed? Ultimately, the conclusion is clear: the future of the financial world lies neither solely in the hands of humans nor machines, but arises from the interaction between the two.
